Job Summary:

This position is responsible for coordinating and managing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and implementing quality control measures. The Laboratory Supervisor will oversee the work of laboratory personnel, provide guidance and training, and develop and implement policies and procedures to improve laboratory performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of laboratory personnel, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement quality control measures to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Oversee the work of laboratory personnel, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve laboratory performance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, including CLIA, TJC, CAP, and AABB.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the work activities of assigned sections and shifts.
  • Keep accurate attendance records and maintain time and attendance records for the department.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in maintaining the laboratory budget and analyzing variance reports.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain current procedural manuals for all tests performed in the laboratory.
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques.
  • Implement an appropriate quality control program and maintain all applicable quality control and functional verification records.
  • Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance.
  • Refers clinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot all equipment in the laboratory to keep it in good working order.
  • Prepare and submit routine or special administrative and technical reports by due dates as required.
  • Order and maintain inventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in the laboratory.
  • Train new laboratory personnel in procedures and policies and provide subsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniques.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, and reporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvement program.
  • Prepare and conduct in-service education for laboratory personnel.
  • Provide input on personnel for hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinary probation, etc.
  • Perform skills review and competency assessments and maintain appropriate documentation on all technical personnel.
  • Oversee and enforce expectations of personnel in the laboratory.
  • Participate in proficiency testing surveys; review and evaluate results and maintain copies of survey records.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings as required to discuss changes and developments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.
  • Utilize and have a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System and applications thereof.
  • Demonstrate competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapt assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Process patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).
  • Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned about age (pedi) or sex-specific values.
  • Provide notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
  • Calculate, enter, and/or verify results of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary for the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Keep abreast of Medical Technology by reading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attend workshops and seminars; become active in local professional associations.
