About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Guidance and Control Systems Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of complex technical problems facing autonomous vehicle systems in development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply guidance and control theory to solve complex technical problems facing autonomous vehicle systems.
  • Evaluate the performance of complex systems using high-fidelity simulations.
  • Collaborate with other guidance, navigation, and control engineers to analyze, design, and implement control solutions.
  • Work with other disciplines to identify and solve the most demanding problems facing our programs.
  • Communicate directly with sponsors to convey important ideas, present data, and help shape control strategy.
  • Perform research in guidance, control theory, and related fields to identify new areas of advancement.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in guidance or control theory.
  • Basic familiarity with programming languages such as MATLAB/Simulink or C++.
  • Strong sense of initiative, creativity, and a passion for learning.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment while supporting multiple development projects concurrently.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or PhD in a related technical field.
  • Experience in project management, mentorship, and leading teams of people.
  • Proficiency in modern and classical controls theory, including nonlinear Lyapunov-based, adaptive, robust, cooperative, and model predictive control methods.
  • Background in guidance theory and its application to flight systems.
  • Strong knowledge in affiliated fields such as state estimation, navigation, optimization, AI/ML, HWIL testing, or flight testing missile systems.
  • Comfortable building physics-based models and applying system dynamics and equations of motion in a simulation environment.
  • Experience in air, underwater, or space domains.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Active Secret clearance.
