Job Overview
The Juvenile Care Specialist is tasked with the supervision and welfare of minors who have been accused or found guilty of delinquent behavior and are residents of the Juvenile Justice Center.
Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Supervisor of the Juvenile Justice Center or a higher authority within the facility.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ensure the safety, engagement, and security of youth within the facility.
2. Provide oversight, structure, and guidance to residents throughout their daily activities.
3. Engage with youth to address their concerns and assist in managing behavioral challenges.
4. Organize and participate in various resident activities, including educational and recreational programs.
5. Conduct initial inspections of youth upon admission to ensure health and safety.
6. Manage the intake and discharge processes, including necessary searches.
7. Monitor facility areas for prohibited items.
8. Respond to emergencies, employing de-escalation techniques and physical interventions when necessary.
9. Transport youth to external locations as required.
10. Identify and report potential issues to supervisory staff.
11. Maintain accurate records of daily activities and incidents.
Qualifications
Education & Experience: Candidates must have completed at least sixty (60) college credits in Social or Behavioral Sciences or a related field, or possess a minimum of one (1) year of relevant professional experience working with youth in various settings.
Skills and Abilities:
1. Understanding of the care and management of at-risk youth in a structured environment.
2. Awareness of the psychological impacts of institutionalization on youth.
3. Knowledge of child and adolescent development stages.
4. Proficient communication skills for interacting with youth on sensitive matters.
5. Ability to ensure the safety and security of residents.
6. Capability to establish rapport with youth facing emotional and social challenges.
7. Competence in maintaining accurate records and preparing reports.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this position, employees may be required to walk, sit, talk, or hear. The role may involve lifting and restraining youth when necessary.
Work Environment:
Employees may work in various conditions, including outdoor settings and environments with fluctuating noise levels.
