At Houston Methodist, the Centralized Telemetry Monitor Specialist is tasked with executing precise EKG rhythm analysis and various electrocardiography duties that assist the collaborative healthcare team in providing exceptional, cost-efficient patient care.

This role requires maintaining proficiency in electrocardiography (EKG), monitoring and computer skills, as well as pulse oximetry (SpO2) as necessary. The Monitor Specialist ensures effective and timely communication throughout the healthcare facility and delivers direct patient care by preparing patients for monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:

TEAMWORK ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Fosters a constructive work atmosphere with the interprofessional care team to achieve optimal departmental outcomes. PATIENT CARE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides direct patient care by preparing patients for monitoring.
  • Organizes tasks efficiently, utilizing all available work time by assisting others and taking on additional responsibilities.
  • Collects information from various sources and communicates it accurately, promptly, and effectively.
  • Demonstrates ongoing skill development through peer accountability to enhance departmental patient satisfaction scores.

QUALITY AND SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Accurately interprets EKG rhythms. Monitors O2 saturation levels as appropriate, understanding when to alert nursing staff.
  • Ensures high-quality patient care by vigilantly identifying changes or abnormalities in EKG patterns. Takes corrective actions or communicates immediately to the appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Provides and accurately processes documentation, quality data, and related centralized telemetry monitor (CTM) records.
  • Verifies that all patient care equipment has undergone quality control checks as required, is in safe working condition prior to use, and documents findings accordingly. Reports any equipment malfunctions to management and regularly engages in preventive maintenance; requests service when needed.
  • Reports 'near misses' and inputs errors promptly into the tracking system to enhance processes and identify trends. Contributes to the identification of corrective actions and improvement initiatives, supporting departmental and hospital targets for quality and safety.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Utilizes resources with a focus on cost-effectiveness and value creation. Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritizes daily tasks while assisting coworkers as needed.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (such as GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, or partial/full completion of post-secondary education).

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Proficient in EKG interpretation.
  • Previous experience in healthcare and/or familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

  • CCT - Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCI) within 1 year OR
  • CET - Certified EKG Technician (NHA) within 1 year OR
  • CET - Certified EKG Technician (ACA) within 1 year OR
  • CET - Certified EKG Technician (NPS) within 1 year OR
  • CMT-BC - Certified Monitor Technician (ABCM) within 1 year OR
  • NRCEKG - Nationally Registered Certified EKG Technician (NAHP) within 1 year OR
  • ECG-B - Certified Electrocardiogram - Basic within 1 year AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, particularly regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with all levels of the healthcare team, ensuring excellent customer service delivery to all patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers.
  • Successful completion of a validated Basic EKG proficiency exam with a score of 80% and correct identification of lethal dysrhythmias during initial and ongoing orientation.
  • Maintains competency in pulse oximetry (SpO2), as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use and maintenance of equipment such as Remote Viewing Station (RVS), transmitters, monitoring equipment, computers, facsimile, and printers.
