Job Title: Paralegal Client Advocate

Join The Legal Aid Society in our mission to provide zealous advocacy and excellent representation to our clients. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Paralegal Client Advocate to join our team.

About the Role:

The Paralegal Client Advocate will work closely with our attorneys and staff to provide support and advocacy to our clients. This includes:

  • Interviewing and assessing client requests for services
  • Facilitating referrals to partnering service providers
  • Providing direct client assistance and support
  • Assisting attorneys with obtaining and preparing relevant documents for parole revocation hearings and other related proceedings
  • Corresponding with clients, their families, courts, adversaries, and corrections officials to assist in release and re-entry back to the community
  • Visiting Rikers Island Correctional Facilities and other facilities as needed
  • Preparing documents for filing and writing memoranda and reports
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited school, a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or satisfactory completion of a comprehensive in-house training course appropriate to the practice area
  • Knowledge of New York criminal law and criminal procedure is strongly desired
  • Notary Public or willingness to become one
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and computer skills, including Excel
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and non-citizens
  • Valid NYS driver's license preferred
  • Proficiency in a language other than English is desirable
