Position Summary:
The Research Financial Analyst plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial aspects of sponsored projects. This position entails a thorough examination of expenditures, analysis of financial transactions, preparation of financial reports for sponsors, and the closure of awards within a designated portfolio. The analyst collaborates within a specialized team to deliver dedicated support to assigned departments throughout the entire award lifecycle.
About the Work Unit:
The Research Finance Team is committed to excellence in managing sponsored projects, ensuring compliance with financial regulations set by sponsors and university policies. This team provides analytical and cost accounting expertise essential for the effective management of Vanderbilt's research initiatives. The Research Financial Analysts are responsible for overseeing project expenditures, conducting financial reconciliations, generating financial reports, and managing award closures. Additionally, the department encompasses Research Accountants who handle invoicing and cash management, as well as Data and Cost Analysts who engage in cost accounting and institutional research reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver targeted support to departments and Principal Investigators throughout the lifecycle of awards.
- Conduct reviews of expenditures, analyze financial transactions, prepare financial reports for sponsors, and execute award closures for a range of awards.
- Investigate, resolve, and address issues related to expenditure management, award closures, and sponsor financial reporting.
- Perform financial reconciliations for awards.
- Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of university and sponsor policies regarding expenditures, award closures, and financial reporting.
- Identify and recommend opportunities for process enhancements and modifications to policies and procedures to facilitate automation and optimize system capabilities.
- Manage tasks within a Microsoft-based tracking environment, demonstrating proficiency in adapting to software changes and meeting training expectations.
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Research Finance.
Education and Certifications:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
- A degree with a focus on accounting or finance is preferred.
- Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Proficiency in intermediate Excel, Word, and PowerPoint applications is essential.
- Experience with task management software and various Microsoft 365 applications is preferred.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment are necessary.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals, understanding their needs and objectives.
- Capability to work cooperatively with others as part of a team.
- Experience in higher education focusing on research compliance and/or financial administration in a regulated environment is preferred.
- Detail-oriented work style complemented by strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Adaptability and openness to change, with the ability to work effectively in various situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with key stakeholders.
