About the Role

The Senior Director of Finance will play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Research and Education Foundation, enhancing our strategic capacity for administering research and education by strengthening a responsive, service-focused administrative office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Planning and Management: Develop and monitor the annual budget, ensuring accurate financial records and compliance with institutional policies, federal regulations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Financial Oversight: Oversee the management of all finances, expenditures, and investments, serving as the key financial liaison to the GLAVREF Board of Directors.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare statements and reports for internal and external audiences, including the GLAVREF Board and other external stakeholders.
  • Post-Award Budgeting: Advise on post-award budgets and commitment activities, approving expenditures and overseeing compliance related to funds and revenue.
  • Financial Communication: Oversee communication with the research and education community, creating forecasting models and decision aids.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Interpret complex governmental policies, including Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), Cost Accounting Standards, and sponsor guidelines.
  • Financial Process Improvement: Assess the current financial transactions and workflow, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Financial Software Implementation: Oversee and guide the implementation and use of software to ensure best accounting practices.
  • Financial Auditing: Conduct audits to assess the effectiveness of controls and accuracy of financial records.
  • Team Leadership: Develop positive and collegial relationships with investigators, their teams, and institutional stakeholders.
  • Staff Development: Mentor accounting staff to improve reporting, invoicing, ordering, and managing revenue.
  • Team Supervision: Supervise the finance team, approving timesheets, and conducting annual reviews.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or financial management of a healthcare-related institution or a related field.
  • Advanced Education: Master's degree in business administration or non-profit management preferred.
  • Experience: Eight (8) or more years of experience in research finance administration, including financial modeling, budget preparation, compliance, and management related to complex grants and contracts.
  • US Department of Veterans Affairs Experience: Experience associated with the US Department of Veterans Affairs relationship.
  • Strategic Planning: Experience in strategic planning and process improvement.
  • Team Leadership: Demonstrated ability to oversee and cultivate productive teams.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent analytical and program-solving skills.
  • Commitment to Mission: Commitment to the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Research and Education Foundation's mission of partnering with VA Research and Education communities.
