Job Summary

Xcel Energy is seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer to join our Power Systems Studies team. As a Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for demonstrating a complete understanding of engineering technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of power systems studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform activities and assignments that may include complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or methods, and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Support the development of technical documentation, including designs, testing, calculations, reports, and standards, utilizing and assisting with the development of procedures requiring a broad knowledge and proficiency in a specialty area and a general knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Work under the general direction of a higher-level engineer or supervisor for routine engineering projects, providing ongoing technical support for project activities within areas such as operations, maintenance, testing/diagnostics, and regulatory.
  • May lead small-medium, non-critical projects, coordinate/lead critical projects or portions of projects, including phases such as research, design, equipment selection, procurement support, installation, and commissioning, under the direction of a higher-level engineer or supervisor.
  • Support bid/evaluation processes, including preparation of bid documents, completion of technical evaluations for proposals, and provide recommendations for selection, partnering and communicating with areas such as supply chain and legal following appropriate processes.
  • Frequently exchange information in all formats, on matters having a wide range of importance and complexity, both inter-organizationally and with outside customers.
  • May assign tasks and coordinate work of interns, drafters, technicians, craft personnel, and/or others, providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
  • Perform activities such as budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management, in support of engineering projects.

Additional Responsibilities

This role will focus on model development, reviews, and analysis of Xcel Energy assets using PSSE, PSLF, TARA, or similar software. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining internal and regional model sets to represent the power system over time, running simulations based on assigned study scopes to test reliability, economics, and alternatives, and developing study report material to support internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency).
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge and proficiency in a specialty area, knowledge of related specialties, and general knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established and documented by the organization.
  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) strongly preferred.
