Position Overview:

The primary objective of the Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management Nurse Specialist is to oversee regulatory compliance and risk management initiatives, collaborating closely with healthcare professionals to enhance patient safety and reduce liability risks.

This role serves as a key resource regarding the regulatory requirements set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the standards established by The Joint Commission (TJC).

Additionally, the specialist is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of systems designed to identify and mitigate risks, thereby safeguarding both patients and organizational assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and conduct comprehensive assessments across the ministry using tracer methodology to pinpoint areas for improvement in compliance with standards and Conditions of Participation (CoPs).
  • Perform thorough audits and inspections of patient care environments, working in partnership with healthcare teams to ensure adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Engage proactively in survey readiness initiatives and facilitate TJC on-site survey processes.
  • Act as a resource for CMS and TJC-related inquiries and participate in unannounced surveys.
  • Oversee the ministry-wide systems for risk identification, investigation, and mitigation.
  • Maintain a robust network of informational resources and subject matter experts.
  • Conduct risk assessment surveys in collaboration with healthcare teams, addressing findings with actionable plans that are monitored for effectiveness.
  • Engage actively in risk reduction strategies.
  • Maintain the risk management program to ensure efficient service delivery and minimize exposure to liability events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, health administration, or a related field is required.
  • Current Iowa licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience in risk management, CPHRM, and/or performance improvement is preferred.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards, TJC, CPHQ, and performance improvement methodologies is desired.
  • Leadership experience in clinical and professional settings is advantageous.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the ability to present information effectively to diverse audiences, including senior management and medical staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Internet applications is required.

Special Skills and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated expertise in performance improvement methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to utilize computer systems for documentation and related activities.
  • Knowledge of software applications such as event reporting systems and government reporting systems is beneficial.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), HealthStream, and reporting tools is helpful.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems such as PowerChart/EPIC is a plus.
