About the Role

The Police Apprentice will receive on-the-job training in basic law enforcement skills, traffic control, crime prevention, communications, first aid, crime scene search, arrest procedures, and criminal investigation. You will also receive training in basic tools of criminology, fingerprinting, photography, and various communication systems.


Responsibilities

As a Police Apprentice, your responsibilities will include:


  • Participating in on-the-job training in traffic control, investigations, crime prevention, communications, first aid, and crime scene investigation procedures;
  • Taking courses in fingerprinting and processing film;
  • Participating in emergency vehicle operations training and firearm familiarization courses;
  • Assisting in inventory control and receiving/issuing supplies;
  • Assisting in inventorying and handling seized and stolen property, which will be used as evidence in court;
  • Performing various administrative functions.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must:


  • Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien eligible for U.S. citizenship by age 21;
  • Have graduated high school or been awarded a GED issued by a state department of education certified by the Virginia State Department of Education;
  • Meet all eligibility requirements for Police Officer I and be selected for employment as a Police Officer within 6 months of reaching age 21;
  • Be willing to sign a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging the prohibition of the use of tobacco products both on and off duty.

Selection Procedure

The selection procedure for this position will include a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, medical exam, and final interview with the Personnel Resources Division Commander or his designee.
