Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Recreation Therapist to join our team at the California State Prison, Los Angeles County. As a Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for leading, instructing, and encouraging patients in a program of individual and group activities of a physical, social, and cultural nature.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement recreation therapy programs for patients
  • Lead and instruct patients in various activities, including indoor and outdoor games, sports, dance, parties, dramatics, and special interest clubs
  • Supervise entertainments and movies, and assist in planning programs for special occasions
  • Work with the therapeutic team to plan treatment goals for specific patients
  • Coordinate recreation therapy with other therapeutic programs
  • Observe patients' reactions and progress, and record clinical notes to be included in medical files
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records
  • Order supplies and equipment, and care for equipment and facilities
  • Maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed to the California Department of Corrections
  • Prevent escapes and injury by these persons to themselves, others, or to property
  • Maintain security of working areas and work materials
  • Inspect premises and search inmates for contraband
Requirements
  • Equivalent to graduation from a recognized college with a major in recreation or recreation therapy
  • Registration as a senior will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent and completion of the required field work before they will be considered eligible for appointment
  • Current certification or eligibility for certification as a recreation therapist by the California Board of Recreation and Park Certification or by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, Inc.
Working Conditions

Travel may be required. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment.
