Job Summary

UPMC is seeking a skilled Radiation Therapist to join our Radiation Oncology team. As a Radiation Therapist, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver radiation treatments to patients as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist and obtain localization images according to planned treatment delivery.
  • Assist physician or nurse in the administration of contrast agents used during treatment localization.
  • Perform measurements for use during treatment calculation and collect and document data acquired during the simulation procedure.
  • Accurately input treatment-related data into the verify-and-record system.
  • Participate in accurate and complete charge capture activities and notify appropriate site leadership of supply needs.
  • Maintain travel expenses according to policy and use all UPMC Cancer Centers resources effectively.
  • Participate in training programs required to maintain ARRT Certification and perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Prioritize patient safety and perform and document daily and weekly QA activity for assigned equipment.
  • Document findings outside the range established by Physics and notify the Chief Therapist immediately of findings outside the normal range of operations.
  • Participate in programs to measure and improve the quality of care within the Department, such as Press Ganey, Quality Improvement Measures, Chart Rounding, and Department Meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with the Radiation Oncologist, Manager, and all team members to maintain high standards for quality service.
  • Participate in regulatory compliance activities and maintain continuous departmental readiness for inspections and surveys.
  • Follow all radiation safety standards and wear radiation monitoring badge and I.D. badge at all times.
  • Remain HIPAA compliant at all times and complete clinical competencies annually as required.
  • Communicate any equipment issues to the appropriate site leadership.
  • Assist in the orientation and supervision of students during clinical rotations and assist the Chief Therapist in evaluation of student performance.
  • Use effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills to provide explanations for treatment-related procedures.
  • Observe patients for expected and unexpected reactions to treatments and communicate this to appropriate staff members.
  • Reinforce patient education/side effect management information and indicate non-compliance to medical/nursing staff.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly treatment room and provide On Call coverage as needed.
  • Have a good understanding of information systems and be fluent in all computer applications necessary to perform their job.
  • Assist at other UPMC Radiation Oncology locations if the need arises.
Requirements
  • Completion of a formal radiation therapy technology program in a JRCERT-accredited institution.
  • Maryland Radiology Tech license and ARRT certified as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • ARRT Registration in good standing or Board Eligibility within six months of hire.
  • Maintain 24 CEU's per Biennium as required for ARRT Certification and Licensure.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Certified Radiation Therapy Technician.
