Water System Maintenance Supervisor

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Water System Maintenance Supervisor to join our team at Salt Lake City. As a key member of our Public Utilities department, you will be responsible for supervising water system maintenance crews, handling emergency and routine trouble calls, and ensuring the smooth operation of our water infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise field and/or shop crews who respond to emergency and routine water system trouble calls, including main breaks, valve issues, and hydrant malfunctions.
  • Repair and replace broken pipes, mains, valves, and hydrants, and install and replace various types of commercial and residential water meters.
  • Instruct, train, and evaluate subordinates regarding operation and maintenance of tools and equipment, and observance of safety and other procedures.
  • Plan, prioritize, and monitor all maintenance work, determining the best means and methods for the job, and recommending changes in operational procedures and system components.
  • Prepare records and reports, requisition equipment, supplies, and materials, and assist with budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Coach and counsel employees, conduct regular performance reviews, and resolve personnel issues, including grievances, work assignments, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure that service histories are kept in computerized files, follow-up jobs are carried out in a timely manner, and crews are provided with proper equipment and training.
  • Respond to questions and complaints from customers and outside agencies, train employees on departmental policies and procedures, and implement same.
  • Back up other field or shop maintenance supervisors as necessary, and perform other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent and two years' post-high school study in administration, hydrology, pipe fitting, plumbing, or mechanical craft, plus five years' paid work experience in water system maintenance. Two years' supervisory or lead person experience also required.
  • Ability to prioritize and assign work to subordinates, diagnose and resolve water system maintenance problems, write reports, keep records of labor and materials used, and communicate well with other supervisors, subordinates, representatives of other departments, government agencies, and the general public under varying circumstances.
  • Possession of flagging certification and valid driver's license or driving privilege card.

Working Conditions:

  • Normally light to moderate physical activity, with occasional pushing, pulling, or lifting of medium to heavy weights.
  • Difficult working conditions at times due to weather or emergency circumstances, with moderate exposure to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, or grease.
  • Occasional exposure to hazards presented by closeness of heavy equipment operation, trenches, and biological hazards, with frequent driving of assigned vehicle.
  • Constant exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and the demands of the position.
  • Subject to emergency call on a 24-hour, seven-day-week basis, with 7-day/24-hour stand-by on a rotation basis.
