Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team at the New Hanover County Detention Facility. As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our facility, as well as ensuring the well-being of our inmates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Intake and Processing: Process incoming inmates into custody, completing necessary paperwork, conducting searches, and securing personal property.
  • Security and Surveillance: Patrol jail areas to maintain order and prevent escape, inspecting cells and confiscating contraband as needed.
  • Transportation and Escort: Escort inmates to and from court, hospitals, and other destinations, ensuring their safety and security at all times.
  • Record-Keeping and Reporting: Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports on inmate activity, including visitations, meals, and medical assistance.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency situations, including medical emergencies and facility breaches.
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Age and Citizenship: Must be at least 20 years of age and a citizen of the United States
  • License and Certification: Valid NC Driver's License and Certification as a Detention Officer within the timeframes set by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission
  • CPR Certification: Must obtain CPR Certification within one year of employment
Working Conditions

Detention Officers work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, often in high-stress situations. They must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended hours, as well as during emergency situations.
