Detention Officer

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team at the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our detention facility.

The Detention Officer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the safety, security, and detention of inmates at the New Hanover County Detention Facility. This includes processing incoming inmates, patrolling jail areas, inspecting cells, and responding to emergencies.

• Process incoming inmates by completing paperwork, searching prisoners, and securing personal property.
• Patrol jail areas to maintain order and prevent escape.
• Inspect cells to ensure cleanliness and sanitation, and confiscate contraband.
• Escort inmates for visitations and appearances in court, and inspect all items brought to the jail.
• Ensure inmates receive daily meals and snacks.
• Respond to medical emergencies and transport inmates to and from court and hospitals.
• Prepare records and reports on inmates.

• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
• Must be at least 20 years old and a citizen of the United States.
• Valid NC Driver's License.
• Certification as a detention officer within time lines set by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission.
• CPR Certification within one (1) year of employment.
