Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is tasked with ensuring that specimens are efficiently received and processed, thereby delivering high-quality laboratory results in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Fosters a positive workplace atmosphere and contributes to a collaborative, team-oriented unit that supports one another in achieving departmental objectives.


Engages with all members of the healthcare team by effectively communicating and relaying relevant patient care information and data comprehensively.

Instructs students, new staff, and others as designated by the Manager.
Participates in laboratory and organization-wide initiatives.


Service Excellence
Conducts qualitative and quantitative testing and examinations utilizing various analyzers and/or manual techniques.
Prioritizes workload and organizes tasks efficiently.


Maximizes available work time by assisting colleagues and undertaking additional responsibilities.
Meets turnaround time expectations as established by management.


Quality and Safety Standards
Exhibits the six essential competencies for test systems utilized to produce patient test results across all assigned areas.

Identifies, investigates, and aids in resolving test discrepancies.
In the event of issues, takes appropriate measures to investigate and address them, notifying management and the medical director for further action.

Conducts instrument calibrations, validations, quality control assessments, maintenance, and functionality checks.


Financial Responsibility
Adjusts work schedules to meet departmental and organizational requirements.
Utilizes the time recording system appropriately.
Employs resources judiciously to avoid waste.


Restocks inventory levels as necessary.


Professional Development
Seeks opportunities for continuous learning beyond baseline competencies, focusing on ongoing professional growth.

Reviews and applies Standard Operating Procedures while providing suggestions for enhancements.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: One year of work or training experience in a hospital laboratory is preferred.


Licenses and Certifications:
Must meet certification eligibility upon entry into this role and obtain one of the following certifications within 18 months:
- Preferred: Certified as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or categorical certification by Board of Certification (ASCP)
- Certified as a Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
- HLA only: One of the following is required:
◊ Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP) certification
◊ Certified by American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI)
- Microbiology only: One of the following is required:
◊ Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP) certification
◊ Microbiology, M(ASCP) certification
◊ Clinical microbiology registry from American Society for Microbiology, RM(AAM)


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
