Position Overview

The Lead Automation Engineer will play a crucial role in the design, development, implementation, and upkeep of laboratory robotics that facilitate automated exploratory biology processes. This position demands hands-on involvement and encompasses a diverse array of engineering skills, including project oversight, troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical components, protocol development, liquid handling, and validation/verification of operating systems. Our objective is to innovate, construct, maintain, and enhance both large and small automated systems for high-throughput screening, automated cell culture, and compound management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with assay biologists to transition bench assays into fully automated assays utilizing high-throughput screening systems.
  • Partner with Sample Management teams to enhance automation for global compound delivery to scientists, integrating cutting-edge technologies.
  • Serve as the project manager for automation initiatives, overseeing the planning, development, and execution of laboratory automation projects from inception to completion.
  • Work effectively with multidisciplinary teams to implement solutions that optimize operational efficiency in terms of throughput, delivery, costs, and health, safety, and environmental considerations.
  • Act as the primary support engineer for laboratory automation and instrumentation, ensuring the setup, operation, and maintenance of advanced high-throughput systems.
  • Establish and maintain a stable and productive automation environment through quality control and preventive maintenance measures.
  • Assist in the creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance manuals, and training materials for new equipment users.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation with the ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines effectively.
  • Exhibit the capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within team settings.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, bioengineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in utilizing and implementing automated systems.
  • Proven experience in designing, constructing, and deploying automated laboratory workflows in life sciences or clinical settings.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with scientific personnel, customers, stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office and CAD software (preferably SolidWorks).
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with laboratory automation, high-throughput assays, and cell culture processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with robotic platforms and associated software such as HighRes BioSolutions, Sartorius CompacT, Tecan EVO, and others.
  • Basic knowledge of C# or similar programming languages.
  • Experience collaborating with engineers and scientists to develop new automated platforms.
  • Background in automated High Content Imaging systems.
  • Ability to devise innovative solutions for complex biological assays at scale.
  • Experience with machine tools such as mills, band saws, and drill presses.
