Position Summary:
The Hydrogeological Modeling Specialist will employ advanced modeling techniques for the calibration, optimization, and probabilistic forecasting of groundwater flow and radionuclide transport from underground nuclear test sites.
The aquifers involved are primarily composed of vitric and welded tuffs, interspersed with lava flows and separated by bedded air fall tuff confining units. The region presents structural complexities, including numerous faults and calderas.
The specialist is expected to produce comprehensive documentation of modeling outcomes, presentation materials, graphics, and data packages.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate expertise in model calibration and optimization.
- Evaluate model sensitivity and uncertainty.
- Understand flow and transport mechanisms in porous and fractured rock, including dispersion, matrix diffusion, radioactive decay, sorption processes, and colloid transport.
- Utilize particle tracking methods for flow and transport simulations.
- Operate on multi-processor computing resources, whether standalone or cloud-based.
- Interpret aquifer test data through analytical and numerical methods.
Specific Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, C, Visual Basic, or Fortran, and will be adept at data manipulation in both Linux and Windows environments.
Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) applications and the ability to utilize GIS files as model inputs is essential.
Experience with various simulation codes, including MODFLOW6, PEST, and GOLDSIM, is required, along with knowledge of geologic modeling software like EarthVision.
Experience in developing models to support regulatory decision-making is highly desirable.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience applying groundwater models to complex scenarios.
Working Conditions:
This position is primarily office-based, with a sedentary work environment. There may be opportunities for remote work following an appropriate orientation and training period.
