Position Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Physical Scientist. This position is open to all eligible U.S. citizens, including those who qualify for noncompetitive hiring authorities such as veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

As a Physical Scientist at the Nevada Water Science Center, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting senior scientists in executing scientific research.
  • Gathering geological and hydrological information.
  • Aiding in the development of scientific documentation.
  • Organizing and maintaining scientific databases.
  • Operating a vehicle as needed for job duties.

Physical Requirements

This role involves some physical demands, including the potential for extended periods of standing in laboratory settings. Fieldwork may require outdoor activities that involve significant walking and climbing in rugged terrain. Candidates should be prepared for physical tasks such as lifting objects over 50 pounds and working in confined spaces.

Work Environment

Laboratory work may expose you to dust, hazardous chemicals, and various mechanical and electrical risks. Adherence to safety protocols, including the use of protective gear, is essential. Field assignments may also involve exposure to extreme weather conditions and natural hazards.

Employment Conditions

Essential Requirements:

  • Candidates must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background check.
  • Selected candidates may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

  • A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are mandatory.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is required.

Special Considerations

  • This position necessitates travel for official duties, and selected candidates will need to apply for a government charge card.
  • A thorough background investigation will be conducted, and continued employment is contingent upon successful completion.
  • Candidates must possess a valid state driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • A pre-employment medical examination is required due to the physical nature of the job.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement:

Candidates must fulfill one of the following educational criteria to qualify for the Physical Scientist position:

  • Completion of a 4-year degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics with at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, totaling four years, with at least 24 semester hours in relevant subjects.

For GS-07 Level:

In addition to the basic education requirement, candidates must meet one of the following:

  • One year of graduate-level education in physical science or a related field.
  • Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate performance.
  • One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal service.

For GS-09 Level:

Candidates must meet one of the following additional criteria:

  • Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in physical science or a related field.
  • One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal service.
