GENERAL OVERVIEW
Under the general oversight of the station captain, this role involves delivering critical services both independently and collaboratively in response to various emergencies, including fire, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents.
The Emergency Response Specialist is tasked with attending to medical crises and providing pre-hospital ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT to individuals experiencing injury or health issues.
As the primary medical authority at emergency scenes, the Paramedic Firefighter is responsible for making informed medical decisions based on established protocols and directives from medical oversight.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts intricate diagnostic and medical interventions, including intravenous access, endotracheal intubation, and the administration of various medications.
- Operates ambulances and other emergency vehicles, functioning as part of a paramedic engine or truck team.
- Completes detailed reports on patient care for hospital emergency departments.
- Performs daily inspections of assigned apparatus, ensuring readiness and reporting any maintenance needs.
- Documents comprehensive patient histories accurately.
- Maintains daily checks on medications and equipment for proper inventory control.
- Engages in firefighting tasks as outlined in the Firefighter job description.
- Handles hose lines, nozzles, pumps, and hydrants; employs fire extinguishers and other tools for fire suppression.
- Participates in salvage operations and post-incident activities to minimize property damage.
- Involved in training exercises and drills as directed.
- Conducts fire and life safety inspections of various properties.
- Maintains cleanliness and general upkeep of fire equipment and facilities.
- Responds to emergency medical situations requiring immediate care.
- Responsible for the safe transfer and movement of patients.
- Engages in hazardous materials response at an awareness level and assists the public as needed.
- Facilitates public education initiatives in community settings.
- Leads departmental training sessions on relevant topics.
- Utilizes city systems for patient care documentation and record-keeping.
- Operates fire apparatus under the guidance of the station officer.
- May serve as Engineer or Acting Officer in Charge when necessary.
- Performs additional duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- At least one year of experience as a certified EMT.
- State licensure as a Paramedic.
- Compliance with state-mandated continuing education, including current certifications in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Completion of the department's emergency ambulance driving course.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Understanding of triage, treatment, and patient transport protocols.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and advanced life support procedures.
- Ability to maintain composure in high-stress situations.
- Proficient in the operation of firefighting and emergency medical equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position involves working in various weather conditions and emergency situations, often requiring physical endurance and the ability to respond to high-pressure scenarios.
