We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Astrophysicist to join our team at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The successful candidate will work under the direction of an Astrophysicist within the High Energy Astrophysics Division.

Job Summary

This is a time-limited position for an Astrophysicist (Post-doctoral Research Fellow) in the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The employee will work on a program of research for electron dynamics and acceleration at high and low Mach number astrophysical/heliospheric shock waves propagating into a turbulent medium.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in and carry out scientific research involving a program of numerical studies on supernova remnant shocks and interplanetary shocks in the heliosphere.
  • Participate in the preparation and submission of proposals for studies using appropriate space-based facilities.
  • Expand an existing Particle-in-Cell code by implementing and testing new routines, analyze the results.
  • Participate in the design, development, and verification of software for post-analysis of the numerical results, as needed.
  • Prepare papers, presenting research results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences.
Requirements
  • PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Space Science, or Electronics.
  • Experience in theoretical/numerical research on particle acceleration at shocks and generation of kinetic instabilities at shocks.
  • Ability to present findings in a publishable format and to present material at professional meetings.
