Position Overview:
The Free Meals Program Shift Supervisor plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful execution of meal services. This individual is accountable, alongside other team members, for the preparation and distribution of meals during breakfast, lunch, or dinner, as well as overseeing all related operations. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for managing the overall functioning of the main dining area, back kitchen, and coffeehouse during any designated meal or preparation period. Responsibilities may include extended hours and/or evening or weekend shifts. Consistent attendance is essential, with schedule flexibility based on organizational needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Guide program staff, interns, volunteers, and community service workers before, during, and after meal service to ensure smooth operations in the dining area. Assign tasks, responsibilities, and workstations based on operational requirements. Monitor and provide feedback on punctuality and performance.
- Collaborate with staff, interns, and volunteers to manage all aspects of kitchen, dining room, and coffeehouse operations during specific meal periods. Work in tandem with others to promote efficient service.
- Maintain clear communication regarding responsibilities and expectations through regular observation and constructive feedback to uphold quality standards and service excellence.
- Demonstrate and promote exceptional customer service, effective job performance, timely problem resolution, and compassionate client management.
- Prepare meals, ensuring quality by tasting and smelling to verify proper cooking.
- Ensure food presentation and portion sizes are appropriate and visually appealing.
- Prepare the dining room, dish area, kitchen, and coffeehouse for subsequent meal periods, ensuring all products are properly stored or refrigerated for the next day.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the dining room, dish area, kitchen, and coffeehouse throughout the day, adhering to a written cleaning and sanitation schedule; ensure compost bins are emptied after each meal.
- Assist the DFMP Manager in addressing personnel issues in accordance with GLIDE's policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with management and staff from other departments to resolve challenges.
- Provide safety expertise and professional assessments for further interventions.
- Engage in departmental and inter-departmental collaboration on project-based assignments.
- Work closely with the Manager to support administrative tasks.
- Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards throughout the food production facility, in line with California food safety training.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience leading a team in a community-based organization or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to lead, provide direction, and supervise a team.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to remain composed in emotionally charged situations.
- Familiarity with the proper use and maintenance of major kitchen equipment, including stoves, refrigeration units, slicers, knives, and dish machines.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality service, with knowledge of food and beverage standards.
- Understanding of health and sanitation regulations; ability to work under pressure while ensuring quality, safety, and sanitation guidelines are met.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities within specific timelines.
- Proven ability to effectively de-escalate challenging behaviors.
- Ability to work effectively across diverse cultures.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must pass Tuberculosis screening and obtain the California Food Safety Certificate.
- CPR, AED, First Aid, and N.E.R.T training are advantageous.
Compensation: $28 - $30 per hour
This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement.
COVID Policy:
All staff are required to be fully vaccinated, with exceptions made for medical or religious reasons. Mask-wearing in the office is optional for staff.
