Substitute Teacher Job Description

An ESS substitute teacher plays a vital role in ensuring the continuity of education in the absence of a regular teacher. This position requires a professional who can effectively follow and implement lesson plans, provide meaningful instruction to students, and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-quality instruction to students in assigned classrooms while the regular teacher is absent
  • Review and implement the regular teacher's routines, procedures, lesson plans, and curriculum objectives
  • Establish and maintain a safe and organized classroom environment
  • Report any student injuries, illnesses, or serious discipline problems to school administration
  • Perform other duties as directed by school administration
Qualifications:
  • Certified - Valid NJ CE, CEAS, or Standard Teacher Certification
  • Non-Certified - Minimum of 60 college credits needed to obtain substitute certification
  • Valid NJ criminal history letter
  • Negative tuberculosis test obtained within 6 months of initial employment
