KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Instruct students in the competencies required to operate CDL vehicles, including tractor trailers and buses.
  • Guide students in parking CDL vehicles using various techniques: with or without trailers, straight back, offset, and parallel parking.
  • Ensure students understand the controls, gauges, and components of CDL vehicles.
  • Teach students how to perform pre-trip and in-cab inspections in preparation for CDL assessments.
  • Prepare instructional materials for simulator lessons, assignments, and evaluations; assess and grade student performance.
  • Monitor and allocate student time in vehicles.
  • Collaborate with management to create, prepare, and enforce safety policies and procedures.
  • Conduct routine vehicle inspections, including refueling; ensure specialized maintenance and repairs are conducted as needed.
  • Maintain necessary documentation for individual student files and other records.
  • Relocate vehicles within the training yard as required.
  • Provide guidance on safely operating a CDL vehicle in various driving environments, including urban, highway, residential, and rural settings.
  • Supervise students as they learn to operate a vehicle safely on public roads.
  • Explain safe steering, braking, and turning methods; cover defensive driving strategies.
  • Demonstrate techniques for managing skids and other driving emergencies.
  • Educate students on state vehicle regulations, including speed limits, driver rights of way, pedestrian rights, accident reporting, and insurance requirements.
  • Familiarize students with highway signs, signals, and markings.
  • Introduce basic vehicle maintenance concepts.
  • Administer assessments related to the curriculum.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

The qualifications listed below are indicative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for success in this position, but are not exhaustive.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of CDL vehicle operation and relevant laws.
  • Patience and composure when instructing student drivers.
  • Knowledge of CDL vehicle components and their functions.
  • Capability to teach students the fundamentals of vehicle operation.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid New York Driving Instructor Certification is mandatory.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is preferred; specific languages will be determined.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to climb in and out of trucks and buses.
  • Extended periods of standing.
  • Prolonged time spent riding in a vehicle.
  • Physical ability to operate a vehicle.
  • Ability to inspect beneath trucks and buses.
  • Ability to see details at varying distances.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Work must be performed with OSHA-required personal protective equipment.
