Job Title: Prevention Specialist

Join Tanana Chiefs Conference in a dynamic role as a Prevention Specialist, working directly with Tribes of the TCC region, tribal members, tribal staff, and other state agencies to provide and coordinate a wide range of services to assist children, parents, and families at risk of becoming involved with the state or tribal child welfare systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identify families in need of prevention services by using screened-out Protective Services Reports received from Office of Children's Services (OCS), referrals made by the Tribe, and other identified programs.
  • Work closely with OCS staff and the Tribe to coordinate services to the family.
  • Use the Strengthening Families approach and/or identified curriculum while incorporating Cultural aspects to deliver quality services to include engaging parents and communities in building five main protective factors.
  • Maintain case files, including case notes, family prevention plans, letters, and other correspondence.
  • Assist in maintaining both electronic and manual program databases for the child protection program.
  • Stay current on child welfare laws and applicable policies.
  • Assist in classroom and teleconferencing training for TFYS, village-based service providers, and other family services staff.
  • Hold parenting classes in person, in villages, and/or virtually to promote family preservation, healthy and safe families, and healthy relationships.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field of study, OR equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA), and the Federal BIA Social Services Regulations and how they relate to tribal protection cases.
  • One year of prior case management or counseling experience to include assessing services for children and families.
  • Must have an Alaska Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • One year of experience writing professional documents such as treatment summaries or court reports.
  • Must pass background check pursuant to the State of Alaska background check and federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical communication skills.
  • Cross-cultural experience working with Alaska Native families and tribes.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate, coordinate, implement, and advocate for youth, adults, and families.
