Position Overview

The Shelby County Youth Development Specialist plays a pivotal role in the lives of justice-involved youth and their caregivers. This position involves building effective relationships, addressing challenges, and providing positive guidance towards behavior changes.

Responsibilities

  1. Assess youth using designated risk/needs/strength assessment tools to inform care plans.
  2. Develop, track, and revise customized care plans for youth, ensuring alignment with their unique needs and goals.
  3. Communicate with justice-involved youth to provide insight into responsible behaviors and attitudes, promoting social and emotional growth.
  4. Collaborate with caregivers to successfully implement customized care plans, empowering them as advocates throughout the process.
  5. Ensure the effective implementation of care plans, monitoring progress and making adjustments as needed.
  6. Coordinate regular check-in meetings to review progress and address any challenges.
  7. Become an expert in local youth development landscape, staying up-to-date on emerging trends and best practices.
  8. Review relevant reports, notes, and data to anticipate and address potential pitfalls.
  9. Empower youth and caregivers as advocates, providing excellent support throughout the process.

Requirements

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and effectively implement strategies aligned with emerging trends in youth development.
  • Ability to communicate complex challenges with compassion and empathy.
  • Knowledge of basic progress reports.
  • Ability to build relationships with children and caregivers.
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills, strong negotiating and analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of computer/laptop/tablet and various web-based applications that support daily job functions.
