Position Overview
The Associate Medical Examiner is responsible for conducting thorough investigations into deaths to ascertain the cause and manner of death. This role encompasses performing autopsies, conducting external examinations, confirming the identity of deceased individuals, reviewing medical histories, interpreting various laboratory tests, and providing expert testimony in legal settings. The Associate Medical Examiner may also assume the responsibilities of the clinical department head in the absence of the Chief Medical Examiner.

This recruitment will remain open until filled, with applications being reviewed on a rolling basis.

Compensation
As of August 2023, the salary range for this position is $14,624 to $21,205 per month.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a valid Washington MD/DO license and should be certified or have previously been certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology. Additionally, candidates must either be certified in forensic pathology or eligible to take the forensic pathology boards, with a requirement to obtain certification within three years of appointment. Maintaining certification in forensic pathology is essential, along with a valid driver’s license in the state of residency.

Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of: Operations and services of a death investigation center; forensic pathology procedures; methods and practices for handling deceased individuals; principles of report writing.

Ability to: Prepare comprehensive technical reports; navigate complex death investigations; utilize strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with colleagues, law enforcement, legal professionals, and the public.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures while performing duties.
  • Conduct timely postmortem examinations, retaining necessary samples and specimens for analysis.
  • Draft written autopsy reports following established reporting standards.
  • Issue preliminary reports regarding the cause of death when further investigation is not required.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to investigations and evidence.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement on cases and provide expert testimony as needed.
  • Visit death scenes or locations of remains to offer professional assistance.
  • Capture documentary digital images as part of the investigation process.
  • Assist in setting and achieving goals for forensic pathology services.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Examiner.
