About the Role
The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for executing a variety of laboratory tests. This role typically involves analytical testing of blood and other human biological samples, requiring a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in licensed areas. Depending on the specific department, various pre-analytical and post-analytical tasks may be included in the job responsibilities, with the possibility of additional hours as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-analytical tasks associated with laboratory testing, including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and specimen collection.
- Perform all designated tests and analytical procedures accurately and efficiently, adhering to established protocols and performance standards.
- Handle post-analytical activities, including reporting results and providing technical support related to laboratory testing for all patient age groups.
- Assist in the training and orientation of new employees and medical technology students, documenting their progress as required.
- Guide technicians and support staff, addressing customer service issues and facilitating workflow as necessary.
- Adhere to safety policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and compliance with infection control protocols.
- Engage in laboratory and hospital performance improvement initiatives.
- Support the evaluation of new laboratory techniques and assist with data collection for special projects.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Technical expertise in laboratory testing and procedures, particularly in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood banking.
- Compliance with corporate policies and regulations from local, state, and federal agencies, ensuring patient confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to work independently, managing priorities and directing workflow with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in maintaining equipment and conducting quality assessments.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office for documentation and record-keeping.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in a relevant scientific field or equivalent education and training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field.
- One year of clinical laboratory experience is advantageous.
- New graduates are encouraged to apply.
Licensure and Certification
- National certification as a Medical Technician, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Technologist is required.
