About the Opportunity

The LEARN Charter School Network is in search of a Language and Communication Specialist who will deliver support, prevention, assessment, and intervention services for students facing challenges in language, speech, voice, and fluency.

These services aim to assist children in achieving their educational objectives.

The Language and Communication Specialist will work collaboratively with school counselors, educators, and administrators to identify and address the social, emotional, and academic needs of students, utilizing the protocols established by the LEARN Charter School Network.

Qualifications
Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or a related discipline. Licensed in Speech Language Pathology (L-SLP) and/or hold Professional Certification (CCC-SLP).
Special Service License with Speech Language Pathologist endorsement issued by the relevant educational authority.
Preferred two years of experience, though candidates with less experience will be considered.
Proven ability to collaborate with school personnel and students to achieve set goals and objectives.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Functions
Planning and Oversight
  • Develops a program that aligns with school speech-language objectives.
  • Contributes to the formulation of program guidelines as necessary.
  • Collaborates with the School District and community programs to provide comprehensive services.
  • Works in partnership with school personnel to fulfill the program's goals and objectives.
  • Participates in meetings, including faculty gatherings and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Schedules interventions utilizing various service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation, and pull-out services as needed.
  • Coordinates speech-language services with other student services provided by school staff.
  • Engages with educators to effectively meet the needs of all students.
  • Collaborates with relevant school personnel to establish specific objectives for individualized educational programs.
  • Keeps records of the speech-language program and prepares periodic reports as required.
  • Ensures confidentiality of student records.
  • Adheres to established rules, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Prioritizes the well-being of each student in service delivery.
  • Avoids conflicts of professional interest.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Screening, Testing, Diagnosing, and Advising
  • Conducts screenings for speech, language, and hearing.
  • Participates in student intervention teams and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams as appropriate.
  • Administers both formal and informal assessments.
  • Observes students in educational settings.
  • Analyzes and interprets data to make informed recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services.
  • Communicates findings to the IEP Team.
  • Educates school personnel about language disorders and their relation to literacy and communication skills.
  • Informs school staff about speech disorders and their impact on learning.
  • Provides guidance to parents and teachers regarding speech, language, and hearing development.
  • Shares current procedures and program guidelines with school personnel and parents.

Major Function:
Managing and Conducting Therapy
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers in managing speech-language disorders.
  • Designs evidence-based interventions tailored to individual and group needs.
  • Implements the most suitable service delivery model based on students' severity levels.
  • Creates engaging activities aligned with students' interests and abilities.
  • Adjusts therapeutic approaches based on performance data.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies specialized curricula and therapy content.
  • Provides constructive feedback and encouragement to students.
  • Arranges the therapy environment to optimize learning conditions.
  • Selects therapy materials that cater to the diverse needs and interests of students.
  • Adapts intervention strategies based on student performance.
  • Fosters positive interpersonal relationships with students.
Adhering to Local, State, Federal Regulations and Ethical Practices
  • Demonstrates knowledge of statewide testing procedures.
  • Follows the professional code of ethics.
  • Develops appropriate IEPs based on students' strengths and needs.
  • Maintains awareness of professional performance in due process matters.
  • Submits and maintains a schedule for screenings, assessments, and therapy services.
  • Keeps an updated schedule for each student's therapy sessions.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities related to the speech-language-hearing field.
Liaison
  • Provides consultation to parents, teachers, and other relevant school personnel.
  • Collaborates with teachers and parents to address students' communication needs.
  • Shares written resources with teachers and parents to support speech-language development.
  • Engages in discussions with teachers about individual student progress.
  • Communicates with external agencies to enhance service delivery.
  • Requests information on students receiving services from external agencies with appropriate consent.
  • Recommends referrals for audiological and related services.
  • Collaborates with audiologists regarding hearing needs.

Physical Demands

Working with children can be physically demanding. Staff may need to lift and carry children and equipment, and may spend time sitting on the floor or using child-sized furniture.

The nature of the role requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and communicate effectively. Staff will also be responsible for maintaining equipment and facilities, and may move throughout the community with students.

Physical demands include the ability to stand, bend, reach, stoop, walk around the classroom, and kneel for a significant portion of the day, as well as navigating stairs multiple times daily. Staff must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds for short periods and push or pull similar weights.
