The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is seeking a dedicated Staff Accountant to join our finance team. This pivotal role involves managing treasury functions, overseeing month-end closing processes, and ensuring accurate postings to the general ledger. The Staff Accountant will also handle monthly journal entries, perform balance sheet reconciliations, and conduct bank reconciliations, in addition to preparing various financial reports as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Manage daily cash flow and maintain relationships with financial institutions.
- Record payroll invoices in the general ledger and conduct quarterly reconciliations.
- Document all cash transactions, including revenue from various sources.
- Assist in the preparation for annual audits and tax filings.
- Maintain organized financial records in compliance with retention policies.
- Support the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and custodial accounts for investments.
- Review invoices for accuracy and ensure proper coding in the budget.
- Process accounts payable transactions and monitor payment statuses.
- Resolve discrepancies and communicate with vendors regarding inquiries.
- Prepare and issue 1099 forms as required.
- Document and update financial processes and procedures regularly.
- Collaborate with the finance team to promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and access within the organization.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the VP of Finance.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Staff Accountant, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Proficient in gathering and analyzing financial data, with the ability to provide recommendations to senior management.
- Experience with computerized accounting systems and a solid grasp of accounting principles.
- Strong analytical skills for reconciling balance sheet accounts and bank statements.
- Excellent proficiency in Microsoft 365, especially Excel.
- Professional demeanor with strong communication skills.
