Position Overview:

North Dakota State University Extension is seeking applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Specialist role dedicated to the Pesticide Training and Certification Program (PTCP). The selected individual will spearhead the training initiatives and competency assessment systems necessary for issuing certifications for the use of Restricted Use Pesticides, as delegated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

This program serves as the primary regulatory authority for pesticide certification in North Dakota and acts as the Extension Pesticide Safety Coordinator. Currently, it oversees approximately 11,000 Private Applicators and 5,800 Commercial/Public Applicators and Dealers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) and the USEPA to ensure proper certification processes are followed.

The responsibilities of the role include:

• Developing and executing North Dakota's Pesticide Certification Plan.

• Providing analytical reports and policy recommendations regarding pesticides to various state and federal stakeholders.

• Managing the PTCP budget and supervising the financial transactions related to County Extension Programs.

• Conducting training sessions for Commercial/Public Applicators and Dealers, along with creating educational resources such as presentations, videos, and manuals.

• Crafting educational materials for County Extension Agents to facilitate Private Applicator Trainings.

• Designing and maintaining competency examinations for all categories of applicators.

• Overseeing the Pesticide Certification Database for North Dakota.

• Monitoring pesticide regulations at both state and federal levels, providing insights and interpretations to industry professionals and NDSU personnel.

• Delivering Worker Protection Standard Trainings for temporary staff involved with pesticides.

• Fostering partnerships with various agricultural organizations and associations across the state.

• Engaging in professional organizations relevant to pesticide safety and education.

Required Qualifications:

• A Master’s degree in agricultural pest management, agricultural engineering, agronomy, soils, horticulture, or agricultural education.

• A minimum of three years of experience in Extension programming.

• A background in pesticide use or sales.

• A valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A Master’s degree focused on pesticide application technology.

• Five years of experience in Extension roles.

• Experience in pesticide application and/or sales for at least two years.

• Proven ability to manage budgets, grants, and personnel effectively.

• Certification as a Commercial/Public Applicator/Dealer.
