Job Summary

The Design Engineer plays a crucial role in performing professional highway and construction engineering and analysis for highway infrastructure projects. This position is responsible for providing complex highway engineering design and analysis, including geometric design, pavement design, hydrologic and hydraulic design, and interpreting state and federal regulations.

This role involves preparing project bid documentation, including proposals, project plans and specifications, engineer's estimate, and special provisions. The Design Engineer may also provide assistance to maintenance projects such as crack filling and seal coating.

This position requires collaboration with multiple project management teams and stakeholders to meet county strategic goals. The hiring range for this position is $90,000-$117,228.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in implementing projects in the Road and Bridge Capital Improvement Program to Federal Aid, State Aid, and/or local standards.
  • Provide professional and complex engineering elements to satisfy accepted engineering principles, regulatory constraints, County financial limits, and public participation needs.
  • Advise and assist Townships and Cities on road and bridge construction projects as described by State Statutes or cooperative agreements.
  • Provide assistance, training, advice, and guidance to engineers, civil technicians, and related staff in advanced and complex engineering principles, design procedures, and practices.
  • Develop and implement Organization Process Assets, including standard design procedures, programs, and processes for effective project management.
  • Participate in consultant selection and reviews consultant plans to accepted County and industry standards.
  • Perform and review complex professional engineering calculations and designs for County infrastructure improvements.
  • Represent the County at project meetings and on committees involving the public and officials of federal, state, and local government agencies related to specific highway projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation, or related field.
  • Five (5) years related and progressive work experience.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Must currently hold, or be able to obtain within 24 months of employment, MnDOT or University of Minnesota Certification in the following areas: Aggregate Production Tester, Grading and Base Tester, Bituminous Street Inspector, Concrete Field Tester, Signal & Lighting, Traffic Control Supervisor, Erosion/Sediment Control Design of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans.
  • Valid Class D Driver's License or evidence of mobility.
