Job Summary

The Histologist Registered assists with the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens to provide data on tissue and organ function, disease causes, and progression. This role requires a strong understanding of histotechnology principles and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, process, and store surgical and cytological specimens
  • Enter patient information, orders, and technical data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Prepare specimens, slides, and blocks for referral and analysis
  • Operate microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, staining equipment, and other laboratory equipment
  • Perform technical procedures to create microscopic slide preparations
  • Assist pathologists and other laboratory personnel with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies
Quality Control and Improvement

The Histologist Registered is responsible for performing quality control and improvement activities, including analysis and recording of quality control data according to policy and procedure.

Maintenance and Laboratory Management

This role requires the ability to perform daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor problems, and initiate service calls as needed.

Continuing Education and Development

The Histologist Registered is expected to attend, read, or listen to educational programs and training sessions to stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent required
  • Successful completion of the core educational curriculum "Excellence at the Front End" required within one year of employment
  • 2 years of experience in histopathology required, or 1 year of experience with an Associate's degree
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) preferred
  • Histotechnology certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification (ASCP) preferred
