Job Summary

The Histologist Registered assists with the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens to provide data on tissue and organ function, disease causes, and progression, adhering to established standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meet the expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Collect, process, and store surgical/cytological specimens.
  • Enter patient information, orders, and technical information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); print and organize cassettes.
  • Prepare specimens/slides/blocks for referral.
  • Order, maintain referral logs, process reports, and monitor pending tasks.
  • Maintain the grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including cleaning and stocking supplies and preparing solutions.
  • Perform technical procedures resulting in the creation of microscopic slide preparations.
  • Within acceptable turnaround time (TAT) guidelines, devise and direct the performance of routine and special stains to provide appropriate slides for microscopic evaluation.
  • Operate microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, staining equipment, cover slippers, and other laboratory equipment to provide quality slides for pathologist examinations.
  • Operate Immunostainer(s) to provide quality slides for diagnostic immunostains.
  • Perform manual stains as needed to provide quality slides for diagnostic immunostains.
  • Assist pathologists/PA's with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies.
  • Perform quality control/quality improvement tasks, analyzing and recording results according to policy and procedure, following CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission guidelines and standards.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, performing established daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoot minor problems and initiate service calls as needed; order and restock supplies/reagents; review policy and procedure manuals; date reagents and discard expired reagents.
  • Participate in continuing education and development, attending, reading, or listening to material from 10-12 in-house educational programs yearly; train new staff in practices.
  • Complete tasks or special projects within assigned timeframes or as requested by supervisors, managers, or directors.
  • Ensure compliance with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards and prepare/participate in all applicable inspections.
  • Follow established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and the use of hazardous materials.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of the core educational curriculum 'Excellence at the Front End' required within one year of employment.
  • 2 years of experience in histopathology required along with a High School Diploma.
  • 1 year of experience in histopathology required along with an Associate's degree.
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) preferred.
  • Histotechnology certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification (ASCP) preferred.
