The NYC Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is dedicated to creating a society where all individuals, particularly those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and those affected by HIV, can live free from violence and discrimination. Our mission is to empower these communities and their allies through education and advocacy, while providing support to survivors through comprehensive legal representation.
Position Summary
AVP is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to fulfill a critical role in our legal services department.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Services
- Conduct legal consultations and offer appropriate referrals or guidance as necessary.
- Provide comprehensive legal representation across various matters, including family law, housing, immigration, public benefits, name changes, employment issues, and advocacy for crime victims' rights.
- Manage all aspects of client cases, including evaluating case viability, preparing and filing legal documents, conducting legal research, and representing clients in court.
- Deliver training and outreach to community members and professionals.
- Collaborate with other legal service organizations to enhance training initiatives.
- Engage in external coalitions to promote the rights of LGBTQ survivors of violence.
- Ensure holistic legal representation by coordinating with AVP departments and referring clients to appropriate services.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Administrative Duties
- Adhere to all internal policies and procedures of the legal department and AVP.
- Maintain organized and complete case files.
- Accurately enter data into the Legal Department database in a timely manner.
- Comply with funding reporting requirements and assist with grant data collection as directed.
- Maintain a valid license to practice law in New York.
- Register with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) to represent clients in immigration matters.
- Follow the New York Rules of Professional Conduct.
Program Engagement
- Participate in weekly supervision and Legal Department meetings.
- Contribute to AVP's anti-oppression initiatives and actively support related goals.
- Attend all-staff meetings and training sessions.
- Engage in external coalition meetings as assigned.
- Support and participate in AVP's signature events.
Qualifications
- Legal license to practice in New York, with preference for candidates committed to a long-term role.
- Experience in public interest law, particularly in humanitarian immigration, family law, or housing.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse, low-income communities, especially those impacted by violence.
- Fluency in Spanish or another language is preferred.
- Strong commitment to social justice and anti-oppression principles.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: This is a full-time position with a salary of $70,000. Multilingual candidates may qualify for an additional salary enhancement.
