Position Overview

Job Title: Associate General Counsel

Department: Office of the General Counsel

Our history of success reinforces this objective, having reshaped the understanding and application of reproductive rights in legal systems worldwide since our inception in 1992.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the General Counsel and existing legal team to enhance and institutionalize the general counsel function.
  • Act as a strategic partner to the General Counsel and other legal office members.
  • Provide legal counsel to organizational leadership and staff on various legal and policy issues.
  • Oversee and mentor staff within the General Counsel Division, including the Director of Compliance.
  • Advance the objectives of the Office of General Counsel, focusing on international operations, including:
    • Formulating strategies to assess and mitigate organizational risks.
    • Managing compliance with non-profit and tax-exempt regulations.
    • Overseeing compliance with international legal standards and updating global compliance policies.
    • Addressing labor and employment law matters, including internal investigations and regulatory compliance.
    • Reviewing donor agreements and managing corporate legal requirements.
    • Leading privacy and intellectual property initiatives, including GDPR compliance.
    • Providing legal support to the Board and its committees on governance matters.
    • Preparing for crisis response and maintaining a Crisis Response Plan.
    • Supervising additional legal staff and supporting the Center's international subsidiaries.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a JD from an ABA-accredited law school or an equivalent foreign qualification and hold a valid license to practice in New York.

Experience Requirements:

  • Legal Expertise: 15+ years of legal practice, preferably with cross-border corporate experience.
  • Non-Profit Acumen: Experience with non-profit organizations, particularly international NGOs.
  • Global Perspective: Familiarity with legal and compliance challenges in both developed and emerging markets.
  • Grants Compliance: Knowledge of restricted grants and complex donor requirements.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and mentor teams effectively.

Compensation and Benefits:
