Job Title: Special Education Teacher Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher Assistant to join our team at St. Catherine's Center for Children. As a key member of our educational staff, you will work closely with our Special Education Teacher to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment for our students.

Job Summary:

The Special Education Teacher Assistant will assist the Special Education Teacher in developing and implementing educational programs for students with special needs. This role requires a strong commitment to providing high-quality support and services to our students, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Special Education Teacher to develop and implement educational programs for students with special needs.
  • Assist students throughout the school day, managing the classroom and providing crisis intervention as needed.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and staff to ensure a smooth and effective educational experience.
  • Participate in in-service training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Director.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalency required; AA in Early Childhood or Human Services; BS in Education or related field preferred.
  • Pursuance and completion of NYS Level-1 Teaching Assistant Certificate within 90 days of hire date required.
  • Permanent New York State Certification in Supplementary school personnel (level l, ll or Permanent TA Certification) preferred.
  • At least one year of relevant experience preferred, with a professional record of integrity and strong work ethic.
  • Experience in the use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), with the ability to respond therapeutically in crisis situations.
  • Proficiency in various computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Google Business Suite, experience with AWARDS a plus.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment.
  • Ability to work with students who exhibit significant emotional, behavioral and interpersonal challenges, mental health diagnoses and trauma history (ages 5-13).
  • Ability to handle sensitive data with strict confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated and engaged, with a strong attention to detail; Excellent writing aptitude.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; and exhibit empathy for students in need.
  • Demonstrated placidity and patience; flexibility and adaptability.
  • Must be willing and able to work in close proximity with the students we serve.
  • Must have the ability to pass required pre-employment background checks, to include fingerprinting.
