Job Description

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, the Patient Care Technician provides basic direct and indirect patient care. This includes taking and documenting vital signs, answering call lights, assisting patients with activities of daily living, and performing clerical duties.

Responsibilities
  1. Observe, collect, and document health status data as assigned.
  2. Complete measurements according to critical elements of policy/procedures.
  3. Report immediately to the RN observations/health status data that are not within normal limits for the patient or are significantly changed.
  4. Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADL) with direction from the Registered Nurse.
  5. Document according to documentation guidelines.
  6. Perform personal care/interventions as assigned.
  7. Assist patients, family members, and visitors with wayfinding on the unit and throughout the facility.
  8. Complete interventions according to identified critical elements of each procedure.
  9. Answer patient call lights promptly for both assigned and other patients.
  10. Assist patients with grooming and hygiene needs, maintains skin integrity, personal comfort, and population-specific needs of the patient.
  11. Complete admission/discharge/transfer functions per system workflow.
  12. Perform clerical duties and assist with patient registration.
  13. Perform accurate and timely processing of physician orders.
  14. Thoroughly document relevant patient information (or care) to assure accurate billing.
  15. Transport medication from the tube system on the unit to a secure location in accordance with facility standards.
  16. Clarify, communicate, prioritize, and transcribe written orders per Electronic Medical Record system workflow.
  17. May order, validate, and store supplies and patient education materials.
  18. May need to print Release of Information (ROI) packet for discharge to a nursing home or other facilities.
  19. Review and explain authorization forms with the patient and obtain signatures if applicable.
  20. Schedule procedures/appointments as needed.
Requirements
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:
  • 18 years of age OR
  • 17 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Completion of one semester of clinical rotations with an accredited nursing program OR
  • Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program OR
  • Completion of the Allina Health Nursing Assistant Academy Program OR
  • NREMT certification upon hire OR
  • Previous direct patient care experience
  • Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must meet one of the requirements below:
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association OR
  • Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross OR
  • Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire
