Position Overview

The Senior CAD Technician is tasked with delivering drafting services utilizing CAD software and Civil3D for various civil engineering, permitting, and surveying assignments. This role demands a strong work ethic, exceptional organizational skills, and sound judgment. The ideal candidate should exhibit intermediate to advanced drafting capabilities and possess the ability to swiftly learn and implement new drafting techniques. Collaboration is key, and the technician should be open to constructive feedback and guidance from seasoned team members.

Software Proficiency

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Proficient in Bluebeam Revu
  • Familiarity with Revit and/or other BIM software is preferred
  • Proficient in major civil engineering CAD platforms (Autodesk and Civil 3D; or Microstation)

Technical Skills

  • Intermediate understanding of technical principles
  • Capable of performing moderately complex drafting tasks independently
  • Ensures quality control of basic deliverables

Team Collaboration

A team-oriented individual who can contribute to large, intricate projects and lead smaller tasks effectively. Anticipates the needs of other technical disciplines and takes accountability for their outcomes. Adheres to established workflows within the practice area.

Project Execution

  • Independently produces plan sheets and exhibits
  • Conducts thorough checks to ensure all revisions and instructions are implemented
  • Reviews all assigned deliverables for consistency and accuracy
  • Compiles, updates, and reviews milestone submittal plan sets

Budget and Schedule Awareness

Demonstrates a solid understanding of project scopes, schedules, and budgets. Capable of predicting and delivering individual tasks within a defined level of effort, consistently meeting budgetary and scheduling expectations.

Industry Standards Compliance

Understands and applies the following drafting standards:

  • Drafting fundamentals
  • CAD standards applicable to DOWL and its clients (e.g., municipalities, counties, states, federal agencies)
  • Accurately interprets revisions and updates CAD drawings and details
  • Creates new project sheets and maintains organized work products across multiple layered files (e.g., xrefs)

Client Engagement

Engages in frequent communication with clients, resolving issues on smaller projects and attending client meetings. Consistently utilizes appropriate communication methods (e.g., email, phone, in-person) based on the situation.

Additional Responsibilities

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Level and Accountability

Executes moderate to advanced levels of drafting work on larger and more complex projects as designated by the market sector, operating with a moderate degree of autonomy.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Associate's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience required with an advanced degree

Certificates and Licenses

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record

Mathematical Competence

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division across various units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Capable of creating and interpreting graphs and understanding statistical analyses.
