Key Responsibilities:
As a Recovery Support Advocate, your primary duties will include:
  • Encouraging self-determination, recovery, and self-advocacy among individuals; assisting them in recognizing their strengths, setting wellness goals, and identifying obstacles.
  • Participating in treatment team meetings to empower individuals in utilizing self-directed advocacy tools and aiding in their goal-setting processes.
  • Providing guidance on accessing benefits such as SSI, SSDI, and Medicaid.
  • Engaging individuals in outpatient programs to foster recovery and resilience.
  • Modeling effective self-advocacy techniques and teaching wellness management strategies, utilizing established methods like IMR/WMR and WRAP.
  • Connecting individuals with community support groups to promote hope, problem-solving, and reduce social isolation.
  • Educating staff on the importance of self-advocacy and peer support to cultivate a respectful service environment.
  • Offering resources and teaching essential transportation skills.
  • Sharing personal experiences to illustrate pathways to stability and recovery.
  • Supporting informed decision-making regarding treatment, housing, and community connections.
  • Assisting individuals in developing crisis and safety plans.
  • Facilitating the enhancement of social skills within the community to support recovery.
  • Helping individuals navigate barriers to recovery and addressing challenges.
  • Assisting with necessary documentation for benefits, employment, and housing.
  • Leading recovery support groups and meetings as appropriate.

Supervision and Consultation:
Regularly seeks supervision and consultation as needed and embraces constructive feedback for personal and professional growth.

Record Keeping:
Maintains confidential records with required information and ensures timely documentation that complies with various funding sources.

Professional Conduct:
Demonstrates courtesy and respect towards consumers, visitors, and colleagues by:
  • Treating individuals with dignity and compassion.
  • Upholding consumer privacy and confidentiality.
  • Being cooperative and pleasant in interactions.
  • Assisting consumers and visitors as necessary.
  • Being sensitive to individual needs and differences.
  • Exhibiting a calm demeanor with consumers and families.

Administrative Duties:
Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives and committee activities as required, completing assigned tasks promptly and adhering to organizational policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a current or former recipient of mental health services for at least one year.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record and reliable transportation.
  • The ability to attend training for certification as a Peer Specialist.
  • Knowledge of the Alabama public mental health system and psychiatric disorders in adults.
  • Understanding of cultural diversity and crisis intervention practices.
  • Familiarity with psychiatric rehabilitation principles and educational methods suitable for adults with severe psychiatric disorders.
