Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Academic Specialist in Japanese Sociolinguistics to join our team at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses in Japanese language and linguistics, as well as graduate courses in Japanese linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop courses in Japanese language and linguistics
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Participate in graduate committees
  • Maintain an active research agenda in Japanese sociolinguistics
  • Contribute to departmental and university service

Requirements

  1. Ph.D. in Japanese language or Japanese linguistics or a closely related field
  2. Demonstrated expertise in Japanese sociolinguistics
  3. Demonstrated experience in teaching and service
  4. Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  5. Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization
  6. High level of proficiency in Japanese and English

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Research capability in an additional area of Japanese Linguistics beyond Japanese sociolinguistics
  2. Teaching experience at a college level
  3. Demonstrated ability to support the university's mission of diversity, equity and inclusion
