The Director of Emergency Nursing Services is responsible for overseeing the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient patient care within the emergency department, operational 24/7. This role encompasses the daily management of all departmental functions, ensuring seamless integration with the hospital's broader network, including personnel management, budgeting, marketing, clinical assessments, and committee organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Holds 24-hour accountability for planning, organizing, and supervising care to ensure patient safety and meet the needs of those served by the department.
  • Engages in strategic planning for emergency services.
  • Collaborates with emergency physician leadership to ensure compliance with clinical standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Fosters relationships with both internal and external partners to guarantee timely and appropriate delivery of emergency services (including EMS, Trauma, Pharmacy, Lab, Registration, Security, and Physicians).
  • Actively participates in the ED network nursing leadership committee, which convenes monthly to discuss various emergency department topics such as clinical practices, policies, behavioral health, documentation, performance improvement, and staffing.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors the emergency department capacity plan, taking proactive measures to manage capacity in collaboration with physicians and inpatient managers to ensure continuous emergency service provision.
  • Ensures accurate financial data capture for emergency department services.
  • Strives for over 90% patient satisfaction by creating and overseeing service initiatives.
  • Performs essential administrative functions for the department.
  • Formulates, implements, and assesses both short- and long-term performance improvement and operational objectives for the department.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to sit for up to 2 hours daily; stand for up to 10 hours daily; and walk for up to 6 hours daily. Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 10 lbs consistently, and occasionally lift, carry, or push objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequent bending, reaching, and manual dexterity are required. Hearing and vision capabilities must meet the requirements for effective communication and observation.

EDUCATION:

Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program and hold a current Registered Nurse license in Pennsylvania or be in the process of obtaining licensure. A Bachelor of Nursing is preferred, with enrollment in a Bachelor of Nursing program required upon hire or promotion, and completion within five years. A Master's degree is preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of five years of clinical experience in emergency medicine and/or critical care, with demonstrated leadership skills, is required. Strong clinical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and proficiency in Human Resources and Financial Resource management are essential. Current BLS certification and basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) are also required.
