Overview

The Specialized Education Instructor plays a pivotal role in crafting a comprehensive educational framework that fosters social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development through engaging and meaningful learning experiences. This position emphasizes building strong relationships with students, encouraging them to cultivate the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for academic success, tailored to each individual's capabilities. The instructor advocates for the needs of students with special requirements and collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure appropriate adaptations and support within the educational setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement lesson plans aligned with district standards to accommodate diverse student needs.
  • Set clear learning objectives for lessons, units, and projects, effectively communicating these to students.
  • Utilize a range of instructional strategies across multiple subjects, including science, social studies, mathematics, English, and reading.
  • Monitor and assess students' academic performance, behavior, and social growth.
  • Recognize and adapt to individual differences in student abilities, learning preferences, and cultural backgrounds during instruction and assessment.
  • Establish and uphold a positive behavioral framework and classroom management procedures.
  • Create a supportive classroom atmosphere that encourages positive interactions, student participation, and learning.
  • Engage with parents, educational staff, and external service providers to develop and execute Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that enhance student learning through tailored instruction and accommodations.
  • Collaborate with school personnel on academic planning and professional matters, applying best practices in curriculum development.
  • Adhere to all administrative policies and regulations governing student conduct.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development by staying current with effective teaching methodologies and educational resources.
  • Maintain accurate student records in compliance with district policies.
  • Ensure all special education documentation and student data are managed in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Supervise students and guide paraprofessionals in accordance with educational programming.
  • Fulfill supervisory responsibilities in line with organizational policies and legal requirements.
  • Meet deadlines for special education documentation.
  • Continuously strive to integrate students into the least restrictive and most suitable environments, including post-school transitions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is mandatory.
  • Experience in Special Education is preferred.

Certifications

  • Valid Pennsylvania State Special Education Teaching Certification.
  • Clearances as required by state regulations.

  • Understanding of contemporary educational research and instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and the ability to apply them effectively.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to student learning and behavior.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development, assessment, and classroom management.
  • Ability to conduct functional behavioral assessments and guide the creation of behavior intervention plans.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in technology use for educational purposes, including software for grading and data analysis.

Physical and Work Environment

This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with teaching, including standing, walking, and moving within the classroom. The work environment varies from dynamic settings such as cafeterias and playgrounds to more controlled classroom environments. The instructor must be adaptable to various weather conditions for outdoor activities.
