Essential Functions

Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this role is to execute custodial tasks associated with the upkeep of municipal facilities and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Conducts cleaning activities including sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors; sanitizes restrooms, windows, water fountains, tables, and related facilities/equipment; vacuums carpets; dusts furniture; washes walls; wipes down equipment; disposes of trash and recyclables.
  • Maintains outdoor areas; sweeps parking lots, collects litter, weeds gardens, and clears debris from sidewalks.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, restocking vending machines, and ensuring paper/soap dispensers are filled.
  • Engages in various grounds maintenance activities; trims shrubs, weeds flower beds, clears debris from outdoor areas; shovels snow; rakes leaves; and spreads salt and sand on walkways as necessary.
  • Arranges and disassembles furniture and equipment as instructed.
  • Reports maintenance needs to the Facility Supervisor.
  • Moves supplies and office equipment as directed.
  • In Public Works, cleans and maintains the Municipal Center and associated facilities and equipment.
  • In Parks & Recreation, cleans and maintains department facilities, including community centers, gyms, weight rooms, and related areas.
  • In Parks & Recreation, manages weight room equipment as directed.
  • In Parks & Recreation, performs painting tasks on doors, walls, and cabinetry.
  • In Parks & Recreation, clears debris from outdoor courts, rakes leaves, and spreads salt and sand on walkways as necessary.
  • In Parks & Recreation, washes and hoses down sidewalks and picnic areas.
  • Maintains consistent and predictable attendance during regular business hours.
  • Must successfully complete a drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and comply with future testing as per the City's policy.

Additional Responsibilities
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred; prior experience in custodial or maintenance work is advantageous. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.

Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning:

Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability:
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials.

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, toxic agents, or pathogenic substances.
