Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tax Equalization Director to lead our valuation and assessment functions in Williams County. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing department staff, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations, and providing technical assistance as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise department staff, including hiring, training, and performance management
  • Assign and direct staff, providing knowledge and technical assistance as required
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, and regulations governing valuation and equalization activities
  • Review, interpret, and implement tax legislation directives related to valuation and equalization functions
  • Prepare and deliver presentations at various meetings, including City and County Commissions, Township Boards, and other relevant committees
  • Provide information to the community regarding property exemptions and departmental programs
  • Authorize property exemptions in accordance with mandated qualifications criteria
  • Receive, investigate, and resolve taxpayer complaints
  • Review County and City sales ratio data for accuracy
  • Develop, administer, and monitor the department budget
  • Maintain confidentiality of non-public records and make available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years' experience as a Tax Assessor, including two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must possess and maintain Class I Assessor Certification
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver's License, or equivalent
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to variable weather conditions and rough terrains
  • Overnight travel required for training
  • Ability to climb stairs and/or ladders
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Must be able to attend occasional evening and early morning meetings
Compensation and Benefits

Starting pay ranges from $37.502 to $40.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Williams County provides generous benefits to full-time regular employees, including paid sick and vacation leave, a fully paid health/dental/vision benefit plan for employees and dependents, term life insurance of $25,000, 100% contribution toward retirement benefits through the ND Public Employees Retirement System, and 12 paid holidays each year.
