Mission of the Department: The Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to providing exceptional anesthetic and critical care services to our patients. We focus on advancing research and quality enhancement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while training future anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs, as well as medical student education.

Primary Objective of the Role: Deliver comprehensive care to patients at VCU Health as designated by the Department Chair or their representative. Responsibilities include pre-anesthetic assessments, intraoperative anesthetic management, postoperative evaluations, resuscitation, intensive care, therapeutic and diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultations for chronic pain cases. Supervision of nurse anesthetists may also be required as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
Education: Engage in clinical teaching at the bedside for residents, medical students, and student nurse anesthetists. Participate in the Department's educational programs and attend necessary conferences, rounds, and meetings as required by the Chair.Research: May engage in clinical or laboratory research and scholarly activities independently, adhering to the Institution and Department's guidelines. Participation in clinical trials is encouraged based on interest and specialization.Service: May be involved in various committees within the Department, School of Medicine, University, or VCU Health System as requested by the Chair or based on personal interest. The Department emphasizes the importance of being a responsible member of the institution and encourages community service at all levels.Clinical Practice: Provide anesthesiology services to patients as directed by the Department Chair or delegate, including in main operating rooms and outpatient settings. May oversee and guide Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as appropriate. Responsible for directing anesthesia care in other critical care environments within the medical center. Essential Qualifications:
MD or DO degreeABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Critical Care CertificationEligible for unrestricted medical licensure in VirginiaEligible for employment in the United StatesStrong communication, clinical, and teaching abilitiesProven experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member.
