Job Summary

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a skilled and experienced Director for Issues Management to join our team. As a thought partner to the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Issues Management, this role plays a crucial part in identifying, analyzing, and addressing various challenges or crises that may impact the institution.

This position requires a strong understanding of crisis management, risk assessment, and effective communication strategies. The ideal candidate will be able to develop and deploy content, communications, and risk mitigation measures to support ongoing priorities related to sensitive matters impacting the University.

In this role, you will work closely with senior leadership and the Incident Response Team to ensure clear, accurate, and timely communication during crises. Your strong written and editing skills will enable you to create effective communications, including internal campus-wide messages, media statements, social media content, reports, talking points, fact sheets, and FAQs.

You will also track news coverage, social media, and other internal and external sources of intelligence to understand the context for issues and forecast emerging topics. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with the News and Media Relations team to identify projects, develop strategy, plan social media postings, and deliver and measure communications.

Essential Functions

  • Establish and implement strategies and tactics related to issues management, focusing on research, writing, and content creation.
  • Receive assignments and prioritize work as directed by the AVC.
  • Perform duties on behalf of the AVC in their absence or as requested to represent the University.
  • Administer operations for the campus Incident Response Team and horizon-scanning processes.
  • Develop and maintain a resource library of content relevant to current and past issues.
  • Monitor and report on data in key areas, gathering relevant background information and translating technical content for a general audience.
  • Track news coverage, social media, and other internal and external sources of intelligence to understand the context for issues and forecast emerging topics.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience.
  • Strong written and editing skills, with experience writing on behalf of senior-level leadership.
  • Ability to think quickly and work under pressure, with excellent time-management skills.
  • Experience working in a deadline-driven environment, with a strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Social media-related reputation management experience, with excellent interpersonal skills.

Salary Information

$83,000 - $114,000 per year, depending on experience.
