Position Summary:

The Surgical Technician I operates under the guidance of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and effective execution of surgical procedures, maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring equipment functionality, and maximizing patient safety throughout the operative process. Surgical technicians are skilled in sterile and aseptic techniques, combining knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to assist in invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. They possess foundational knowledge and capabilities to perform surgical scrub duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Execute technical duties across all operating room specialty areas, adhering to established standards of practice.
2. Ensure proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization of specialty instruments.
3. Adhere to aseptic techniques, proactively identifying and rectifying contamination issues.
4. Conduct surgical counts and follow protocols for discrepancies.
5. Label medications and solutions; monitor usage quantities.
6. Assist in the identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
7. Participate in the organization and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes for optimal accessibility.
8. Support the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of relevant anatomy and conditions affecting the surgical procedure.
9. Assist in case selection and instrument planning.
10. Adapt scrubbing procedures based on situational information and communicate effectively with the surgical team. Respond to surgical emergencies and adhere to emergency management protocols.
11. Manage inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
12. Identify and report defective instruments and supplies. Assist with restocking of operating rooms and sub-sterile areas.
13. Support the registered nurse during the intraoperative phase of care.
14. Operate complex equipment and troubleshoot as necessary.
15. Mentor Surgical Technician Trainees and serve as a preceptor as needed.

Additional Information

Education Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED
Licensure/Certification Requirements:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or
Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or
Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech
Professional Experience Requirements:

• 0-3 years
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

• Successful completion of service-specific competencies

• Strong communication and customer service skills

• Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
