The Surgical Technologist I plays a vital role in the operating room, working under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills to provide optimal patient care.
Responsibilities- Performs technical duties in all operating room specialty service areas, adhering to accepted standards of practice.
- Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
- Follows aseptic technique, identifying and addressing contamination and breaks in technique.
- Performs surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies.
- Assists in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Participates in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes to ensure optimal accessibility during procedures.
- Assists the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
- Recognizes and modifies scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, communicating with the surgical team.
- Responds to surgical emergencies and follows hospital-wide emergency management plans.
- Operates complex equipment and resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
- Serves as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and preceptor as needed.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology
- 0-3 years of professional experience
- Successful completion of service-specific portion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
- Strong communication skills and customer service relations
- Excellent organizational and priority-setting skills
This is a full-time position with a standard 40-hour workweek. The schedule will be Monday through Friday, with four 10-hour shifts per week. The hours will be 7am-5:30pm, with one self-assigned late day per week and one day off per week. No weekends, holidays, or call requirements.
This position is employed by UNC Health Care System with UNC Health benefits. If you are a current employee of another North Carolina agency and participate in TSERS or the ORP, you will be eligible to continue participating in those plans at UNC Health.
