Job Summary

The Library of Congress is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Chief of the Research Engagement and General Collections Division. This is a unique opportunity to lead a team of experts in the preservation, security, and service of the Library's collections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Planning and Direction: Develop and implement programs and operations managed through the division, ensuring alignment with the Library's mission and strategic plan.
  • Supervision and Management: Manage supervisors and staff, providing guidance and oversight to ensure the effective delivery of services.
  • Program Oversight: Exercise overall responsibility for the oversight and administration of broad, emerging, and/or critical Library programs or operations.
  • Research Support: Ensure onsite researcher support is provided at all hours the Library is open, including the Main Reading Room and the Science and Business Reading Room.
  • Collection Development: Ensure subject-level recommending officer coverage and the appropriate use of acquisition funds for the acquisition of important collections, ensuring the Library's collections are responsive to the needs of researchers.
  • Access and Service: Ensure the provision of inter-library loan, Congressional loan, Reader Registration, and other means of providing access to the collections.
  • Service Delivery: Ensure the timely and effective service of the collections to Library users, including all general collections and scientific and technical reports under the division's custodianship.
  • Policy Development: Recommend policy related to the acquisition of collections.
  • Assessment and Improvement: Lead a robust assessment program that enables continuous improvements in the provision of services.
Requirements
  • Leadership and Management: Ability to exercise supervisory and/or managerial authorities.
  • Project Coordination: Ability to coordinate, develop, and implement multiple projects.
  • Collection Development: Ability to develop and/or manage library collections.
  • Reference and Research Services: Ability to manage reference and research services.
  • Consultation and Liaison: Ability to provide consultation or liaison services.

This opportunity is open to LC permanent and indefinite staff who have permission from their supervisor.
